Good food, neighborly activities at Clear Fork schools

CLEAR FORK VALLEY — Activities for kids and parents trying to get ready for the start of school got a jump start of sorts at open houses and yard sale/information activities Wednesday.

The Parent Teachers Organization (PTO) had a stand set up on the lawn of the Bellville Elementary School, where all sorts of green (the Clear fork color) items were for sale.

Free food was available, and representatives of several other groups were there to hand out information.

The Bellville Neighborhood Outreach Center (BNOC) had an information stand, as did the Girl Scouts.

PTO had its “spirit store” where you could buy a hoodie for $25, or a bracelet for $2.

The group is going to have similar sales once a month at schools, said Ronda Gearhart, of PTO. The sales are an alternative to traditional fundraiser activities, she said.

The food stand, where everyone could get hot dogs, vegetables and dip and chips, was possible because of aid by sponsors, whose names were listed at the stand. Kroger and Pepperidge Farm were listed as donors.

Ashley Agee, with the Girl Scouts, said her organization is trying to get troop activities started. An effort was begun before but after four meetings activities stopped, she said. Membership in Girl Scout activities costs $30 a year. Information Agee was handing out says there will be a “Back-To-Scouting” event Aug. 31 for returning and new members at the Gorman Nature Center. It will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Agee works out of the council office in Mansfield.

Jacob Hamilton was handing out information at BNOC, which wants people to know about its food distribution activities.

The next opportunity for people to get free food will be Aug. 28, in the parking lot of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bellville.
