BELLVILLE — In a battle of old Ohio Cardinal Conference foes, Clear Fork topped Ashland 2-1 at the Corral on Thursday night.
Ashland broke through first in the 27th minute of the first half when Katie McQuillen re-directed a cross from the right wing past the Clear Fork keeper.
The Lady Colts answered nine minutes later when Bianca Hoffer split two Ashland defenders with a perfect pass to Kaylin Helinsk,i who slipped it past a charging Ashland keeper. The game remained tied 1-1 at halftime.
The second half saw high intensity and action by both teams. At the 60-minute mark, Ashland was trying to clear the ball out of their defensive end when Macy Wade intercepted it and fed Helinski, who made a move past an Ashland defender and blasted a left-footed shot to the upper left corner for the game-winning goal.
The Clear Fork defense shut down Ashland the rest of the way with Torri Curry having seven saves in goal.
The win moves Clear Fork’s record to 5-2-0 overall and still 1-0-0 in the MOAC.
The girls are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 9 vs Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy. The junior varsity game starts at 11 a.m with the varsity kicking off at 1 p.m.
