Lady Colts advance to district title game

MILAN — Clear Fork is headed for Saturday’s Division II district championship game following Thursday’s 6-4 come-from-behind win over Shelby.

With the victory, the Lady Colts improve to 25-3 this season. Shelby falls to 16-11.

The Lady Colts play Upper Sandusky at noon Saturday at Edison High School. The winner advances to the regional tournament next week at Tiffin University.

Either the Lady Colts or Lady Rams will play at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 24, vs. the winner of a Saturday game between Oak Harbor and Maumee.

In Thursday’s game, Clear Fork gave up a run in the first inning vs. the Lady Whippets. But they rallied in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-1 advantage. Shelby responded by socring solo runs in the third, four and fifth inning to regain the lead, 4-3.

But once again, the Lady Colts rallied. Again they answered a Shelby advantage with a three-run rally.

The Colts led 6-4 at the end of the fifth, and Darian Gottfried and the Clear Fork defense shut down the Whippets the rest of the way for the victory.

Gottfried gave up six hits, struck out five and didn’t walk a batter.

The Colts also had an uncharacteristic five errors, which led to two unearned Shelby runs.

On offense, Clear Fork scattered nine hits. They also stole six bases. They needed all the offense they could produce as Shelby had just one fielding error.

Gottfried had three singles and three RBI to lead the Colts at the plate. Carson Crowner had two singles; Haylie Miller a single, double and an RBI; Brooke Robinson chipped in a single and RBI and Whitley Snavely had a single.
