Drowning victim identified

CLEAR FORK VALLEY — A ten year-old girl who drowned in a pond outside Butler Monday has been identified as Kassidy Crandall.

The child was found floating in a pond in a field off Gatton Rocks Road, in an area that is part of the Wade and Gatton Nursery.

Mark Wade was the person who found the girl, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department said. Wade took off his shoes, waded into the pond and retrieved the girl. She was transported to the Mansfield Ohio Health by Jefferson Township Fire/EMS, where she was pronounced deceased.

The incident was reported about 4 p.m.

Sheriff’s deputy J. Winbigler spoke with the girl’s mother, Tracy Schwartz, who said that the girl had been playing with her nine year old brother, Kasey, and neighborhood kids all day.

Richland County Coroner Tom Stortz said an autopsy would be performed to determine the cause of death.

The victim’s address was listed as 1270 Ohio 97 East, which is near the pond site.

The drowning occured at 1377 Gatton Rocks Road at Cutnaw Road.
