BUTLER — This year’s Apple Fest started Thursday, with the crowning of a fair queen and official opening ceremonies.
Lauren Mellott was named 2016 Apple Fest Queen. She was presented flowers and the sash by last year’s queen Kaitlyn King.
The fest was opened by Butler mayor Ken Kinley, who introduced Bill Lewis, pastor at River of Life Church. He gave the invocation. The American Legion post had a flag folding ceremony, explaining the 13 steps required when honoring the flag.
A number of stands were open, serving items like a glistening apple dumpling, available at the Dairy Belle stand. Locals were sampling sandwiches and numerous apple items, while listening to music and visiting with friends.
Other events at the fest include a parade, on Saturday, and a tiny competition for kids who want to show how they ride tiny tractors.
