Butler man dies in Tuesday crash in Knox County


Daniel Niebel, 51, pronounced dead at scene of Treaty Road crash

MOUNT GILEAD —Daniel Niebel, 51, of Butler, died after a single-vehicle crash Tuesday evening on Treaty Road in Knox County.

According to the Mount Gilead post of the Ohio Highway Patrol, Daniel Niebel was a passenger in a Ford Ranger being driven by Tyler J. Niebel, 20, also of Butler. At about 5:39 p.m., on Treaty Road, just north of North Liberty Road, in Knox County’s Pike Township, Tyler Niebel lost control of the pickup, drove off the right side of the road, striking an embankment, a utility pole, a fence and an under-ground gas line pole. The pickup overturned onto its right side.

Daniel Niebel was pronounced dead at the scene.

Tyler Niebel was transported to Knox Community Hospital with minor injuries. Another passenger, Benjamin Graham Niebel, 23, of Butler, also was taken to Knox Community Hospital with minor injuries.

According to troopers with the Mount Gilead post, seatbelts were not in use and alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.

Troopers at the scene were assisted by Fredericktown Fire and EMS and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office.
