BELLVILLE – Plans are under way to brighten up a veterans’ memorial in the old section of the village cemetery.
Council members talked about what should be done with the older site inside the cemetery at a recent council meeting. The site, in the center of the cemetery, was paid for by the local Amvets group. It is circular, with evergreens banked against a row of white poles.
The idea is to make the area more welcoming and attractive to cemetery visitors.
The construction is to be done by Terra Valley, which is a local firm. The plan is to get the updated measures done by Memorial Day of 2019, said Bellville mayor Teri Brenkus.
Brian McCartney ,of K. E. McCartney and Associates, Inc., has said he will donate work preparing blueprints and construction documents for the new flag memorial, Brenkus said.
Council member Josh Epperson, who serves on the cemetery committee, told village officials about the effort.
A larger construction project is underway outside Bellville, where land is being prepared for an expansion of the cemetery.
Village officials have long talked about the need for a cemetery expansion. The new area will sit just outside village lines along State Route 97 West.
