Richland Commissioner placed on leave following arrest

By Zach Jones -

Richland County Public Health Commissioner Martin Tremmel was placed on paid administrative leave following his arrest that stemmed from an alleged physical altercation with his wife on Kelley’s Island on July 11.

Dr. Daniel Burwell has been named to the position of interim health commissioner. The announcement came as a result of a July 15 Richland County Board of Health special meeting .

“The Board of Health will not comment further on the subject pending the resolution of Mr. Tremmel’s legal matters,” Selby Dorgan, director of Health Promotion and Education told reporters.

“The Board of Health wants to assure the public, our community partners and our employees that the daily work of the health department will remain steady through this transition while this legal matter resolves,” Dorgan said.

The meeting was called to address Tremmel’s status with the organization after officially being charged with domestic violence in Erie County. He has served as the permanant Richland County Public Health Commissioner since 2014 after serving in an interim position.

“Dr. Burwell is our medical director and will be our acting health commissioner. But at this point there is no additional salary,” said Richland Public Health Human Resources Director Richard Grega.

The Board of Health’s next regular meeting will be held July 20 at 7 p.m. in the James R. Corley Room in Richland Public Health’s building at 555 Lexington Avenue in Mansfield.
