The inaugural Spherion Mid-Ohio 13er half-marathon and 5K fun run takes aim at raising awareness and engagement for drug prevention efforts throughout Richland County.
Coming this fall, the 13.1-mile and 3.1-mile races are enlisting the help of volunteers and participants alike in order to raise funds for local prevention agencies. Founder and Director of the Spherion Mid-Ohio 13er Tim Hilterman has been looking for a way to make a difference since learning of Richland’s existing drug crises during a Leadership Unlimited program.
“I was really struck by the affect that drug abuse has on our area,” he said. “I wanted to get involved and create something other people who want to help can get involved with as well.”
The turning point for Hilterman came after he and other Leadership Unlimited program participants were addressed by 19-year-old addicts from the area.
“It touched my heart to hear of the struggle someone can have when they get wrapped up in drug abuse,” said Hilterman. “I wanted to help but I had a hard time finding out where I could plug into the cause.”
After unsuccessfully looking for an avenue to assist those struggling with addiction, Hilterman created the Mid-Ohio 13er to raise awareness and give others the outlet needed to get involved in the cause.
“The reason for this run is to encourage people to take note of the problem and not just sweep it under the rug,” he said. “We are also looking to bring a fun community centric atmosphere to Mansfield.”
Proceeds from the event will be held at the Richland County Foundation and then used to benefit area community outreach organizations. Registration is $55 for the half-marathon and $25 for the 5K fun run.
“Anyone regardless of skill level will be able to participate in the 5K,” said Hilterman. “Participants can either run or walk.”
