Richland County man dies in State Route 545 crash

The Mansfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash involving two vehicles that occurred on State Route 545 near Piper Road Saturday at 11:57 a.m.

The deceased, Clarence F. Jackson, age 79, of Greenwich, Ohio, was traveling southbound on State Route 545 driving a 2011 Chevrolet HHR. Jackson’s vehicle traveled left of center and struck a 2009 Subaru Forester driven by Paul W. Bright, age 76, of Ashland, Ohio, that was traveling northbound on State Route 545.

Bright and a passenger in his vehicle, Mary Ruth Bright, age 76, were transported to Ohio Health Mansfield Hospital by Mansfield City and Madison Township Fire Department personnel respectively. Jackson was transported to Ohio Health Mansfield Hospital by Mifflin Township Fire Department personnel where he later died.

Investigation revealed Jackson traveled left of center after negotiating a curve striking Bright’s vehicle head-on. Safety belts were in use by both drivers and Mrs. Bright.

The Patrol was assisted at the scene by Mansfield City, Madison, Franklin, and Mifflin Township Fire Departments, as well as Shelly Smith & Sons Towing.

The crash remains under investigation.
