People promoting activities in the valley are getting ready for the First Thursdays events in Bellville.
On the first Thursdays of each month, starting in June and ending in September, downtown businesses are being asked to stay open until 7 p.m.
The Bellville Revitalization Group and the Clear Fork Valley Chamber of Commerce are sponsoring the events.
Each Thursday there will be a concert at the bandstand at 7 p.m. The two groups suggest people have a picnic in the park, and bring a blanket and picnic supper.
Restaurants are being encouraged to offer something like a special “picnic in the park” meal, and offer one free item — a cookie or a drink — to go with the meal.
“We sincerely hope you will participate in this attempt to bring shoppers downtown during an otherwise quiet time,” their brochure says.
Organizers said they encourage businesses to offer some time of special to encourage people to come to downtown. The suggestions include a drawing for a small prize; a discounted “special” item; a First Thursday discount; face painting or other activities for children; snacks, for instance a plate of cookies or snack crackers.
The brochure also says activities for children are encouraged because when you “get the kids, you’ve got the parents.”
The two groups said they were pleased with the turnout for the event last year, and think this year promises to be bigger.
The chamber and the revitalization group are also seeking financial support for the concerts. A figure of $150 is suggested for sponsorship.
