Knox County Fair Resource Adventure Zone – July 27, 29, & 31, 3-6 pm

Catch a shuttle to the back of the parking area to experience the newest attraction of the Knox County Fair – the FREE Resource Adventure Zone. Enjoy seating in the shade, cold bottled water, and a tent filled with exhibits and activities from 3 pm – 6 pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of fair week. Try a pond study, inflatable soil tunnel, recycling games, energy explosion, archery, balloon animals and more. Visit on Friday to see the BFEC’s live animals! Sponsored by the Knox County Recycling & Litter Prevention, in conjunction with the Knox County Park District, Knox Soil & Water District and OSU Extension. Email for more information. Wolf Run Walk – Aug. 1, 1 pm

New Gambier Road Trailhead. It’s hot outside, which makes it the perfect time to explore the waters of Wolf Run. Walk approximately .75 miles on BFEC trails, then put on your old tennis shoes or water shoes to wade in and look for salamanders, small fish and bugs. The hike will cover 1.5 miles total. Middle School Nature Club – July 30, 4-5:30 pm

The BFEC is pleased to offer this break from the summer doldrums for kids who have finished 6th, 7th, or 8th grade. Led by volunteers and Kenyon student staff, the club will focus on service projects, learning more about the great outdoors, and simply having fun. We’ll head to Kokosing River on July 30th for a mini-river clean up and big fun. The next (and last) meeting will take place on Thursday, Aug. 13). Attendance is free; register your child by replying to with the following information: Child’s name, age, grade completed, parent’s name, phone number.

Spi-Spot First Friday Free Open House – Aug. 7

Come explore, learn, and play for free during First Friday in Mount Vernon on August 7. Or find SPI this summer on Wednesdays 10am-noon with a science activity at Ariel-Foundation Park and Tuesdays 11:30am-1pm at Riverside Park. SPI-Spot at 227 S. Main St., Mount Vernon during regular open hours M, T, Th, Fr 10am-5pm; Sat 11am-4pm. (closed during fair week, July 25 – August 1). See for details.

Summer Music Garden Series featuring Elixir – Sunday, August 9, 4-6pm. Knox County Career Center Children’s Garden, 306 Martinsburg Road, Mount Vernon.

Cycle Knox Trails – Aug. 15, 9 am – noon

Join the Knox County Park District for this new cycling series of rides, meeting monthly through the fall on Saturdays from 9am-noon. These family friendly rides all begin at a different location, so please pay attention to scheduled ride details. Remember to wear comfortable clothing, wear your bicycle helmet and bring a filled water bottle. A limited number of small and medium bike helmets will be given away, thanks to Fredericktown EMS and the Knox County Health Department.
