MVNU women’s soccer gets road win in Bethel

The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s soccer team got back in the win column on Tuesday night with a key 5-0 Crossroads League victory at Bethel College (Ind.) Having tied a pair of matches last week, the 18th ranked Lady Cougars got on the board early to grab the momentum and the defense shutout an opponent for the 10th time this season.

“I’m very pleased with our performance tonight,” MVNU Head Coach Daniel Seiffert said. “Our focus and intensity was where we needed it to be, especially with it being on the road. Bethel is a hardworking and tenacious team so I was pleased with the result. We will get back to work tomorrow as we look to prepare for this weekend.”

Casey Apple set the tone for the rest of the night when she broke a scoreless drought with a goal in the 6th minute, giving MVNU (9-4-2, 2-2-2 Crossroads League) a 1-0 lead. Apple was able to work her way through the defense to find the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season.

The Lady Cougars would add to their lead with goal number two of the night just under 10 minutes later. Rachel Baker (SR/Cincinnati, OH), who was the team’s leading scorer coming into the game, connected on her ninth goal of the campaign off a free kick following a Bethel (2-12-1, 0-6 Crossroads League) penalty.

MVNU carried the 2-0 edge into halftime and proceeded to tack on three insurance goals in the final 45 minutes. Lydia Simpson (SR/Chillicothe, Ohio) made it a 3-0 match with her fifth score of the year in the 50th minute followed by an Emily Heaton (JR/Twinsburg, Ohio) blast the curved just inside the post in the 53rd minute. Heaton’s score extended the lead to 4-0 and gave her goal number eight in the season totals. Baker would then cap the night for the Lady Cougars with her second score of the match and 10th on the season in the 65th minute.

Baker powered the MVNU offense with two goals and a team high six shots on Tuesday night. Apple followed with four shots and one goal, which went into the books as the game winner. It would prove to be Apple’s third game winning kick of the season.

As a team, the Lady Cougars outshot Bethel 21-14 with the Lady Pilots holding a slight edge in corner kicks at 6-5. Madi Moore (SO/Pataskala, Ohio) started in front of the net and played all 90 minutes for her fourth win of the year. Moore ended up making nine saves after turning in a 10 save performance on Saturday.

Lindsey Seifert led the Bethel offense with four shot attempts with all four being stopped by Moore. Goalie Mallory Conrad surrendered all five MVNU goals and made 10 saves in 90 minutes of work.

MVNU will be back on the road Saturday afternoon when the team heads to Marian University (Ind.) for another Crossroads League contest. The kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
